Hey guys...I'm the writer over here at Chewed Toenails. I'm the mommy to 3 kids and copilot in life to one amazing husband.
I started writing when our youngest child was diagnosed on the autism spectrum. It was easier to get my feelings out here then actually talk to friends and family (although my therapist must think I never shut up).
Up until March 2016, we led what we thought was a pretty normal life with one quirky kid who we refer to as "A" here on the blog.
Our oldest, R, is 19 and serving her country in the United States Coast Guard.
Mr. G, our middle child and 10 year old is destined to be a future politician.......he loves government history, talks to everyone and can lie like the rest of them! He's a book worm, the smallest of all our kids with the biggest personality and the only blond hair, blue eye among the 5 of us.
And then there is A, who is 9 and the reason for this whole blog. He has the best sense of humor and I wouldn't be surprised to see him on stage as a comedian one day.
For 5 years of his life we always thought he was just a picky kid. Picky eater, sensitive to noise, bright lights and scratchy clothing and just our all around trouble kid. But then he started acting different. Running from school. Repeating things. Little things that were big enough for us to question.
Diagnosis #1 came as ADHD, combined type.
Diagnosis # 2 came as Unspecified Anxiety Disorder.
Diagnosis # 3 came as the A word.
I was relieved. I was scared. I was worried. I was ready to fight. I knew the world had heard of autism but I was determined to have A seen as a child that was not defined by autism. So here we are, writing about our struggles, our laughs and our happy times.
